Pokémon Red and Blue Walkthrough

Beginning:
Okay, you get the game, turn it on, and follow the directions in order to start. You will be in your room in your home town of Pallet. Walk out into the tall grassy area near the north of your town. You will be stopped by your rival who brings you to Prof. Oaks. There, you choose a pokemon to begin with. I recommend Bulbasaur, the plant poke, but Charmander, the fire poke, is pretty strong, and Squirtle, the water poke, is alright. Plant pokemon can defeat rock and water type pokemon easier than water and fire type pokemon can, and the first 2 Gym Leaders have rock and water type pokemon. Your rival will challenge you to a battle. Beat him and your pokemon will earn its first experience points.
In the grassy areas are wild pokemon. How do you capture them? Well, heres some bad news, you cant. You can buy poke balls at Viridian City, but now I suggest getting your pokemon to the highest level you can possibly get it to. And to do that, you need to earn experience points. Keep going north and gather items (those things that look like poke balls) until you reach the highest north you can get to. Go through. You will be in Viridian City.

(Viridian City)
Go to the poke center and heal your pokemon. When you go to the mart, however, the store keeper will ask you to bring a package to Prof. Oak. Travel all the way back to Pallet and give Oak his parcel. He will give you (and your rival) a Pokedex. After getting the pokedex, travel back to Viridian and buy some poke balls and other handy dandy doo-dads. You will be needing them as you enter Viridian Forest.

(Viridian Forest)
As you enter Viridian Forest, talk to the guy standing next to the tree. He will tell you that there are other trainers in here that are looking for someone to fight. In Viridian Forest, you can capture Caterpie, Metapod, Weedle, Kakuna, and Pikachu (who is really hard to find). To get through it, go right, then up, then left, then down, then back up again, then down, then right and up and you're outta there!

(Pewter City)
I suggest going to the poke center first and getting your pokemon healed. Go to the mart and buy a few items, poke balls, antidote, repel, potion, etc. Now, head on to the Gym. The gym leader is Brock and he specializes in rock-type pokemon. His pokemon will be extremely easy to beat (especially if you have Bulbasaur or Squirtle). He has a Geodude and an Onix. Beat him and earn the Boulder badge. The badge makes all the power of all your pokemon increase a little bit and you can use Flash anytime. Go back to the poke center and heal up.

(Cerulean City: Mt. Moon)
East of Pewter City is the mysterious Mt.Moon. The pokemon you can find are Zubat, Clefairy, Onix, and Geodude. Go up then right. Keep going right and fighting all the trainers. Heal your pokemon at the Pewter City pokemon center. There will be a guy holding up a sign. The sign will say, "Route 3 Mt. Moon ahead." Enter the cave to the right of the Poke center. Heal up your pokemon before entering, and remember your route. If your pokemon get injured, you can always come back. In the cave, you can find, TM 12, potion, HP Up and Rare Candy. Go to the ladder that is guarded by a guy. Either avoid or defeat him, and then go down the ladder. Follow the path until you reach a Team Rocket member who will challenge you to a battle. He isn't too hard to beat. After you beat him, go up the ramp and someone else will challenge you. After you beat him, though, he will give you one of his two fossils. The Helix Fossil will give you Omynite later on in the game. The Dome Fossil will give you Kabuto later on in the game. I suggest getting the Dome Fossil, but pick whichever one you want. After you choose, he'll take the other one. Go up and follow the path until you walk out of the cave. Keep going right until you reach the city. Now, you are in Cerulean City.

(Cerulean City)
In Cerulean City, there is a Pokecenter, a Pokemart, a Bike Shop, and a Gym. Go ahead and heal your pokemon in the Pokecenter. Buy some potions in the Pokemart, just in case you need them. Talk to all the people you can, then go into the Bike Shop. Of course, you can't afford a bike now, wait until you reach Vermillion City. Anyway, now that you've seen the city, go to the Gym. Misty The leader of this particular Gym is Misty:Water Pokemon Trainer. She has two water pokemon, Staryu and Starmie. Staryu is on level 18 and Starmie is on level 21. If you started with Charmander, its going to be hard to beat her. Squirtle would be the same way. Bulbasaur would beat her easily. But if you started with Charmander or Squirtle, use a strong Pikachu against her. Electricity does well against water pokemon. Beat Misty and earn the Cascade Badge. All your pokemon get a little stronger and pokemon up to level 30 obey you.

(Gary)
As you venture to the top of the city, you will run into your rival, Gary. He will have quite strong pokemon, but you can beat him. He will have four/five pokemon with him. After beating Gary, continue up the long path fighting trainer after trainer after trainer after trainer and so on. After beating the Team Rocket dude at the top of the path, continue right and, again, fight all the trainers there. Keep going right until you reach the Sea Cottage. Go inside and talk to the pokemon in there. You find out that he is Bill and that he was turned into a pokemon because of an experiment he conducted. Change him back into a person, and he will give you a St. Anne ticket. Now, leave the Sea Cottage, and walk back to Cerulean City.

(Cerulean City 2)
You're back and, as you can see, nothing has changed. Except for one. The guard in front of the house near the top of the city has moved. Go into the house and talk to the people that were robbed by the evil Team Rocket. Exit the house using the back exit. Go right and down and follow the path straight down. Turn left and go down again. There is a path that leads straight down and a path that is blocked by ledges. If you jump over the ledges, you will eventually end up in the pokemon Daycare center. A man will agree to keep one of your pokemon and raise its level while you are gone. Yes, you will get your pokemon back!! Passing the Daycare center, you will find a small building to the right of the screen. Enter and go down the stairs. The underground passage leads to Vermillion City, and the next gym leader awaits his next challenger.

(Getting to Vermillion City)
Leaving the underground pathway, turn right and follow the path. Go down, then right, then down again, then left, then down, and look!!! You're in Vermillion City

(Vermillion City)
Go ahead and heal your pokemon, stock up on supplies, etc. Notice that you can't get to the Gym because there's a scraggly looking bush blocking your way. How do you get past? Well, read on!

(The St. Anne)
If you didn't know, the St. Anne is the ship that Bill gave you the ticket for. Go to its dock and show the guy your ticket. He will let you pass and let you go into the ship. You need to find the captain of the ship in order to gain the Cut hidden machine(HM). You need the Cut HM to cut down the bush infront of the Gym to get to the Gym leader and earn your Thunder Badge. The captain is not in any of the little side rooms decorating the corridor. He has his own special little room. Gary blocks your way into the room, and challenges you to, again, yet another battle. Beat him, and enter the captain's room where you will gain the Cut HM for the small price of rubbing his back. As you leave the St. Anne, the ship will leave, and there's no other way to go but back.....

WAIT!! DON'T GO ANY FARTHER!!!
If you have the Japanese version, or an English version, but I don't know if it works in the English version, use a pokemon with surf and surf around the area. Don't have a pokemon with surf? Well, trade with someone to get the pokemon with Surf. But, if the ship already left, and you go back to Vermillion City, you will no longer be able to go back to this area. You need to trade someone for a pokemon with Surf in order to do this BEFORE the St. Anne leaves. I'm telling you this because that pokemon, Mew, is supposedly located in one of the islands near the St. Anne. Mew is supposed to be in a pokeball on an island. All you have to do, is go up to it, and the screen will read, "ASH got MEW." I don't know for sure if this works in the English version, but I DO know this works in the Japanese version. Go ahead and try it out anyway.
